Angela China, Artist

New York City

New York artist, Angela China began using street art as a way to ignite conversations with the public, mainly on the topics of women’s issues and sexual politics.  China now exhibits in galleries and fairs across the U.S. including Art Wynwood, Aqua Miami & Scope New York. Notable public clients include Viacom, Live Nation & Spotify. In 2017, China unexpectedly diverted from exhibiting in order to earn a Masters of Fine Arts at The New York Academy of Art.

The 2018 Women’s Movement inspired a new direction for China’s work. ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes,’ became the first of a series where the artist shifts focus from introspection to outward observation. The painting replaces the prostitutes of Picasso’s Demoiselles D’Avignon with five monumental sexual predators of her time. The movement inspired China to call upon her street art roots. She plastered posters of the painting throughout the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Her project was documented by publications such as Complex, Hyperallergic, Daily News and Jerry Saltz.

Since graduating from NYAA China has settled back in her studio. Her most recent project is called “Frontline Warriors”; a collaborative mural on canvas inspired by the fearless dedication of our healthcare workers. The 15ft canvas was auctioned by Heritage Auction House with 100% proceeds benefitting the American Nurses Association Coronavirus Fund. The painting was purchased by Long Island Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn where it is now on display in the lobby in hopes of invigorating those who continue to walk into work and sacrifice their lives every day.
